Prison dragged on - and on, and on, and on. It was a never ending cycle of days that turned in to months, weeks, years - which turned in to more years than Nicky had ever planned on spending behind bars, thanks to fucked up drug-fueled choices and standing at her family’s side in a hidden pool one day. Brought straight to max with added years on her sentence, she had pretty much given up hope of ever getting out. Prison was going to kill her - it was going to drain her until nothing remained of the person she had once been or the person she had become with her family at her side in Litchfield. 

She’d accepted that fate. Embraced it. Let max turn her in to shell of the person she had been until suddenly there was no trace of Nicky Nichols left in the body she had once claimed. 

And then suddenly it was over, and lifeless eyes found themselves on a prison bus being shipped to the nearest bus station with a parole officer watching her like a hawk. She had a shitty little apartment in a halfway house, 75 dollars and no idea how she was supposed to become a person again. How the fuck was she supposed to reintegrate with society when she’d spent almost ten years behind bars? She’d never been good in the first place. The world wouldn’t want her.

She had to anyways.

She had been out a month when she finally got a shitty job at a shitty little pizza joint. She was surprised they took her at all but hey - she could get the lady from the house off her back about at least one thing. 

She’d been there two weeks before they fired her.

Time dragged on. Life dragged one. Days became weeks became months. The monotony never stopped but slowly, piece by piece, Nicky started feeling like a human again. A drained, hopeless human but a human none the less. She became friends with one of the chicks across the hall, learned to have a conversation with another person again. She learned how to look after herself again.

All of that progress felt like it meant nothing when a familiar silhouette brought back memories of a girl she had once loved so many years before.

She shot up for the first time since Litchfield that night, in the alley besides her halfway house so they couldn’t get mad at her for having drugs in the building and kick her out.

She’d thought it was a dream, but it wasn’t ‘cause two days later as she was walking through a park she saw the same woman she’d seen before and God it was her. Older, maybe wiser - maybe not. It was the first time she’d ever seen Lorna with her hair not curled up, but there was a smile on her face as she watched a little boy cross some monkey bars from a wooden bench.

Lorna didn’t see her. Nicky kept walking. She couldn’t tell if this was the past trying to haunt her or a blessing from a God she didn’t believe in. She knew, she knew, that Lorna Morello was the key to the last piece of her humanity, but at the same time she knew the woman also tore her a part.

She’d talk to Lorna if she was there on the way back, Nicky decided. She was gone - must have been fate.

It was hard not to keep seeing her after that, though. Nicky hadn’t realized how often Lorna visited that park - must live near by or something. She’d never pictured Lorna as a New York girl but maybe Vinnie lived here or some shit. She didn’t give that much thought to it - or at least she said she wouldn’t. (She did anyways.)

Eventually, though, Lorna saw her. 

“Nicky?” She hadn’t expected to be summoned, especially in that voice - but really, she knew it would happen eventually. Maybe that was why she kept walking through this park. Maybe that was why she kept holding on. Maybe that’s why she’d had the one hit and fought off the urge to do it again, as hard as that was.

Nichols stopped in her tracks, pursing her lips together and turning towards the small figure.

“Lorna.” She didn’t know what else to say. She didn’t know what there was to say. There’s a pregnant pause, and she breaks the silence. “How’ve you been?”

“I’ve been okay you know, just makin’ sure my babies are okay; same old, same old.” Lorna offers her a smile, and then looks away to glance towards the play equipment. 

When Lorna says babies, Nicky’s gaze turns to the kid she’d seen her watching time and time before. That’s when she notices the toddler the kid is playing with has been the same each and every time. Fuck. Maybe she’d done some good calling Vinnie all those years ago - apparently the man had at least half a set of balls and did the right thing. Did the thing she couldn’t - the thought crossed her mind and she hated herself for it.

“Babies, eh? Popped out another?” She tries to hold a conversation but she doesn’t know how. This isn’t prison and she’s not the same person that she used to be. 

“Yeah.” She smiles in the direction of the kids and Nicky can’t take her eyes off of Lorna.

Next thing she knows the screams of two crotch fruit are interrupting the silence.

“Mommy who’s this?” The boy asks, holding his little sister’s hand. The girl’s a spitting image of her mother and for the first time in a long time Nicky feels something other than nothing - regret. Regret that she’d gone to max in the first place, that she’d called Vinnie, that it had been six years since she’d last seen the one person she’d ever really loved.

And regret that she felt jealous, petty. Regret that she wants to be by Lorna’s side even after all of these years, because fuck - she had no right to think these things about a married woman.

“Sammy this is Nicky, she’s an old friend of mine.” Lorna crouches down to the kid’s level to speak to him, and then looks up at Nicky with a smile. “Nicky this is Sammy, and his little sister is Sara.”

“You don’t have friends.” The five year old’s remark is curt and Nicky has to try not to laugh about how straightforward kids can be. Lorna, however, isn’t very impressed - the smile on her face turns in to a frown and she pushes lightly against the boy’s lower back.

“Go play, Sammy. Take your sister with you.” Lorna’s got a serious tone and the same frown forms on Sammy’s face as he grabs his sister by the wrist and begins to run back off.

“Looks like you’ve got a handful,” Nicky said with a chuckle once the coast was clear again.

“Yeah, I love em though.”

“Vinnie good with them?” Vinnie even in the picture still? She couldn’t see that man being good with kids, let alone these kids and their mother. 

“He, uh… He’s amazing with them, loves em to bits.” There’s hesitation in her voice, and Nicky knows immediately there’s more to the story. 

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Lorna nods, quick and jolty. Silence fills the air and Nicky cocks her eyebrows, silently asking if she Lorna was sure about that.

“On weekends, okay. He’s great with them - on weekends. He left me after I got pregnant with Sara. Are you happy now?”

For a second, Nicky’s taken aback by Lorna’s tone and she flinches away. 

“Nah. Not happy. Just knew you weren’t telling the truth,” Nicky says and she finally takes a seat on the bench besides Lorna, close enough that their fingers almost touch. “What happened? I knew he was a piece of work but you’d think he woulda left, y’know, before knocking you up again if he had a problem.”

“I don’t know. I thought things were great. Sammy was a baby, you know. We moved here a couple months after I got out ‘cause he was livin’ with his mother and y’know, we needed the space. And I get pregnant, and he says he’s had ‘enough of this shit’ and just… goes. I didn’t want him to, and I mean… We was great you know? I had my husband and my son and it was great.”

Nicky bites her lip, but leans over to rub Lorna’s back anyways.

“That’s rough babe.” She takes her hand off of Lorna and wonders what she’s supposed to do now. Years ago it would have been simple - tell her how amazing she is, that she’ll always be there for her, but right now Nicky can’t even be there for herself let alone the special brand of crazy that makes up the most beautiful person she’s ever had the pleasure of seeing.

“And I mean… I’m raisin’ two babies on my own now Nicky. I never wanted this. It’s easier, ‘cause Sammy, he’s in school now, but… I never wanted to be raisin’ my kids on my own.” Years ago, Lorna would have been in tears by now, having a meltdown that she swore she’d never recover from. She’s not, though - she’s distressed, that Nicky can tell, but she’s doing a damn good job of not causing a scene. 

Huh, people really can grow.

“Well, hey. I’m not much use right now, but you got a friend in me any time you need it okay?” She rests her elbows on her knees and slouches forwards, looking up towards Lorna. She then glances at her watch, and realizes the time - she was supposed to hit up a job interview and if she didn’t leave now she’d be right fucked.

“Look, uh, you got a phone?” Lorna reaches in to her pocket and pulls out a cell, which Nicky grabs and puts the number to her place in to. “If you need me, any time, call me. Uh, before 10. Or I can get in shit. But I have a thing I really need to get to.”

“Oh… okay.” Lorna’s got puppy dog eyes on her face now, silently begging Nicky to stay and she would, she really would, but fuck she can’t miss this interview or she’ll be in shit. She’s on her last chance to have a place to live and not even Lorna Morello is worth being homeless for.

“Look, I don’t wanna go. Really. But I’ll see you around, okay? I better.” She says it but part of her hopes that she doesn’t, that she doesn’t get pulled back down the rabbithole that is Lorna Morello - but the other part of her thinks that’s exactly what she needs to become herself again.

The Boys Origins: Lamplighter

SPOILERS FOR THE BOYS SERIES SEASON 2 EPISODES 5&6 AND MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE BOYS COMICS

i mentioned this in my first lamplighter post but there is almost no information known about lamplighter from the comics because he only appears in a few scenes in flashback so if there seem to be big details left out, know its because there isnt much to work on from the comics. so if you hit the keep reading mark, lets continue. 

 the lamplighter iteration above is the revamp he was given for the show but in the comics his look is more, well this:

his power is derived from the staff he carries which can be used as a kind of blowtorch and can omit a blinding light. but other than the usual hes strong and he can fly, thats pretty much all we know about him. 

my theory for the show is that the lighter he was flipping during his call to stormfront is the staff

okay im going to keep the events as linear as i can, numbered, because it can get confusing, here we go:

1: we know in the show, mallory (gender-swapped for the show, retains the name from the comics) blames butcher for the death of her granchildren but i cant remember if they talk about whether it was lamplighter or not (more on that in a minute).

2: now we backtrack to 9/11. in the comics, the seven are sent to save one of the hijacked planes and they fail miserably (this is the mirror in season 1 when homelander and maeve arent able to save the plane, i cover that in my queen maeve post here: https://stranger-galstiel.tumblr.com/post/628324444982657024/tw-plane-crash-spoilers-for-the-boys )

lamplighter was there but he left after getting hit by the wing of the plane and breaking multiple bones.

3: unlike in the show, in the comics homelander is well aware of the boys and knows that they are known for blackmailing supes to keep them in check (we saw a first glimpse of that in the last episode when billy blackmailed edgar saying he had pictures of ryan, and just as a side note, expect more blackmailing from the boys its their specialty). when the boys find out about what really happened they threaten vought with exposing what the supes did (and primarily homelander since he was the reason the plane went down into the hudson in the first place due to his violent streak) to the plane and the people. lamplighter isnt happy with this and leaves the team.

4: back to one - i spoke briefly about how mallory blamed butcher for the death of her grandkids but in the comics lamplighter actually follows mallory to his grandkids and when they are alone he burns them alive. mallory blames butcher in the comics as well, but the difference with the show is that the boys are coming together for the first time as opposed to already being a team in the comics so the only one who knows about any of this is butcher.

5: the seven and the boys meet in an air force base for a ceasefire and when the boys get there they find the hangar covered in blood (the seven killed an entire platoon) and are told by the seven thats what will happen to them if they dont agree to mutually stop (the seven would stay out of national matters and the boys wouldnt release their blackmail). the seven also give the boys the lamplighter and after beating him, mallory shoots him in the head and throws him out of an airplane, presumably killing him.

6: we know that lamplighter “retired” at the beginning of the boys series; thats how starlight was able to join the team. this is the same in the comics HOWEVER its revealed years later that lamplighter did not die when he was shot in the head and thrown out a plane (since hes still a supe and all that). so vought brought him back to life and kept him hidden away in the basements of the tower, since he can no longer be a superhero in his zombified state. these zombie supes are “displayed” in certain circumstances but are not meant to have a life anymore. this is so vought can maintain a facade that their heroes are “indestructible”

SO NOW MY THEORY SINCE THE SHOW HAS GONE OFF THE RAILS FROM THE COMICS:

okay in 6 i talked about how vought brought the lamplighter back to life but hes in a zombie state so hes not fit to be a functioning member of society. the original run of the comics is set between 2006-8 and we know we’ve advanced in the field of medicine quite a lot since that time so what if vought was able to advance medicine so much they made lamplighter fully functioning and that place the boys are going to visit in the this episode is where they keep them and lamplighter is there guarding voughts secret and the boys are about to discover it and hes helping them to stop them.

but my theory only works if lamplighter had died in the show which as of now we know he probably hasnt unless vought killed him to prove a point and then brought him back for whatever reason. i just dont know whats happening its making me so nervous

okay so homegirl here has had it pretty easy her entire life. both of her parents are well established in the industry ( which is actually how they met; mr & mrs smith style u know ... sfdgsg ) & household names, featuring in several blockbuster hits. like the infamous philosopher dr justin roberts once said: “six figures, i was only four”, nicole was born with several silver spoons in her mouth. while most would assume she’s a straight up trust fund punk, though, she inherited her parents’ impeccable work ethic and talent to a fault.

as an only child and therefore sole heir to the porter estate, her parents have been on nic’s ass her entire life to give her absolute best in everything she does. health, school, sports, friendships, relationships, the whole shebang. raised as a poster child, her marks were always near the top of her class, she excelled in the ballet classes her mother insisted nic attend since she was a little girl, took on leading roles in almost every school play / musical, and even tried her hand in softball. but it wasn’t until she hit her mid adolescent years, that her focus on going to university and becoming the world’s next best neurosurgeon faltered.

after graduating high school with exemplary marks, instead of taking the opportunity to potentially thrive in the big leagues of the surgical world, nicole opted to stick to her creative roots, following in his parents’ footsteps. she auditioned for several roles, acting small parts here and there, but it wasn’t until she landed a role on fox’s musical show glee ( as quinn fabray ) that nicole earned her stripes and leaped to stardom. since then, she’s also made big waves with her role in house at the end of the street ( as elissa ), starred in an episode of black mirror ( as yorkie in san junipero ), and even voiced a video game character for until dawn ( as jessica riley ).

ST. LOUIS | The Latest: Tiger makes turn at PGA just 2 shots off lead

ST. LOUIS — The Latest on the PGA Championship, golf’s final major of the year (all times local): 2:45 p.m.

Tiger Woods had five birdies and a bogey on his opening nine of the third round, moving within two shots of Brooks Koepka and Gary Woodland in the PGA Championship.

Woods is in a group at 8 under that includes reigning champion Justin Thomas, first-round leader Rickie Fowler and Adam Scott.

Jordan Spieth is another shot back at 7 under as he tries to win the PGA and complete the career grand slam.

Daniel Berger continues his turnaround. He was 6 over after his first nine Thursday, but he’s roared to 5 under for the championship. He has three birdies without a bogey in his third round. ___ 2:20 p.m.

U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka has pulled into a tie for the lead at the PGA Championship.

Koepka is trying to become the fourth player to win the U.S. Open and the PGA in the same year, joining Tiger Woods (2000), Jack Nicklaus (1980), Ben Hogan (1948) and Gene Sarazen (1922).

Speaking of Woods, he’s followed a bogey at the fourth with back-to-back birdies to get to 3 under on his round. He’s three off the pace set by Koepka and second-round leader Gary Woodland.

Chris Kirk is also making a move. He’s 4 under through 11 and 6 under for the championship. ___ 2:10 p.m.

Kansas native Gary Woodland isn’t the only guy with a “hometown” crowd behind him at Bellerive.

Brice Garnett made the cut right on the number in his PGA Championship debut, much to the delight of his friends and family from Chillicothe, Missouri. Garnett starred at Missouri Western, a Division II school and the training camp home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He still calls Gallatin in the western part of the state his home.

Garnett went wire-to-wire to win the Puntacana Resort and Club Championship in March, his first PGA Tour victory and one that got him into this week’s championship at Bellerive. ___ 1:20 p.m.

Emiliano Grillo has back-to-back birdies at the PGA Championship to join the logjam at 6 under that includes Tiger Woods, who came within a whisker of holing his pitch shot for birdie at No. 4.

If Bellerive is offering any defense, it’s the thick fescue and bluegrass rough that became saturated by Friday’s rain. And that’s where Woods drove his tee shot at the fourth before hacking his approach shot shy of the bunkers guarding the right front of the green.

With another perfect lie in the zoysia fairway, Woods’s pitch shot danced to the right and nearly rolled into the cup before settling about a foot away for a tap-in par. ___ 12:45 p.m.

Tiger Woods has birdied the first two holes of his third round at the PGA Championship, and now will try to string a few more together to chase down second-round leader Gary Woodland.

Woods is now 6 under, four shots off the lead.

He got off to a bogey-double bogey start on Thursday at Bellerive, and it looked as if Woods’s comeback tour had hit a wall. But he fought back to shoot even-par 70, then worked around the rain that suspended play Friday to shoot a second-round 66.

Woods is trying to join Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus as five-time PGA winners. ___ 11:55 a.m.

Justin Rose is among the players at the PGA Championship who finished their rounds Friday and knew they’d make the cut, allowing them to sleep in a bit on Saturday.

Rest he did, too. Rose said he didn’t watch any of the early coverage on television.

The Englishman will be 4 under when he begins his round off the first tee at 12:32 p.m. He’s in a group with Zach Johnson and Emiliano Grillo that is six shots off the lead.

Rose had some back spasms last week at Firestone, but he says “from Wednesday afternoon I’ve been feeling perfectly fine.” ___ 11:20 a.m.

The third round is underway at the PGA Championship, and among those headed out at Bellerive is Daniel Berger — an incredible turnaround given where he was after his opening nine holes.

Berger was 6 over before playing his last 27 holes in 8-under par.

“I just stopped trying at one point. It’s funny how things work out,” said Berger, who was tied for the lead entering the final round of the U.S. Open before finishing in a tie for sixth.

“The last 27 holes I just kind of freewheeled it,” he said, “so that was kind of good.”

Especially considering Berger has been dealing with a wrist injury.

“It sucks,” he said, “because I’ve never been hurt before, and it’s just kind of been lingering and there’s not really a point in the season I can take a break. Just been trying to play through it.” ___ 10:50 a.m.

The second round has wrapped up at the PGA Championship, where Gary Woodland leads at 10 under and it took even-par 140 just to make the record-low 36-hole cut.

The previous low for the PGA was 1-over 141 at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2001.

Some big names missed playing the rest of the weekend, too. Matt Kuchar, Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau were in a large group at 1 over. Masters champion Patrick Reed was 3 over and Phil Mickelson was in the group at 4 over.

Eighty players made the cut, including some relative surprises. Ben Kern was the lone club pro to make the cut, while 55-year-old Vijay Singh and Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk made it through.

Julian Suri has surged into contention at the PGA Championship with an eagle at the par-5 17th taking him to 5 under, an impressive showing for the former Duke standout.

Suri’s father, Jagan, is the great grandson of Buchi Babu Naidu, one of the early pioneers of cricket in India. Jagan Suri moved to the U.S. in his teens and spent time as a professional tennis player, and now works in business development of golf courses.

Julian Suri played tennis and golf when he was young, but he clearly showed a preference for the latter. He won last year on the European Tour and has been second time this year.

Phil Mickelson will fail to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1993 after a 1-over 71 left him 4 over for the PGA Championship and well outside the cut line.

He still could be among Jim Furyk’s four captain’s choices.

Mickelson is 18-20-7 in the Ryder Cup, but he played well two years ago at Hazeltine National, when the Americans routed the Europeans 17-11 to win back the cup.

Bryson DeChambeau was just outside the top eight that automatically qualify for the team. He missed a short putt at his final hole Saturday to keep from playing the weekend. ___ 9:35 a.m.

The approach that guys will take between the second and third rounds at the PGA Championship will vary widely depending on when they finish Saturday morning and when they tee off again.

Some will have less than an hour between their rounds.

Then there’s Rickie Fowler, who concluded his 3-under 67 to get to 8 under for the tournament and within two shots of the lead. Fowler said he plans to return to the house he’s renting down the road from Bellerive, where he can change out of some wet clothes and catch some rest.

“Put some fresh clothing on and then yeah, get here like we normally would,” said Fowler, the first-round leader. “But it’s still going to be a long day.” ___ 9:15 a.m.

Sungjae Im probably should stop aiming for the greens at the PGA Championship.

The 20-year-old South Korean was right on the cut line Saturday in his second round when he chipped in for birdie on consecutive holes.

That got Im to 2 under for the championship, which would be good enough not only to play the weekend but get within eight shots of the lead.

Im became the second-youngest player to win a Web.com Tour event when he triumphed in his debut in the Bahamas earlier this year. He also has a couple of second-place finishes on the tour.

The youngest champion in Web.com Tour history? Jason Day. ___ 8:45 a.m.

Tony Finau has matched the PGA Championship record for birdies in a round with 10.

If only he didn’t also have three bogeys and a triple on his card.

Finau wound up with a 4-under 66 on Saturday to get back to even for the championship. His birdie display came while playing with Jim Furyk, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain who could have to decide whether to include Finau on his roster next month in France.

The birdie record for the PGA was set by Gary Player. Anthony Kim has the record for birdies in a major championship with 11 during the 2011 Masters. ___ 8 a.m.

Finau began his second round Friday with five straight birdies, made a triple bogey, then had two more birdies. He added a bogey to finish off his front nine, and another birdie on the back nine has the U.S. Ryder Cup hopeful at even-par for the championship.

He’s played 12 holes and has made just one par on the round. ___ 7:15 a.m.

Haotong Li did not resume his second round at the PGA Championship, withdrawing with a wrist injury after his round was suspended by rain. He had completed the 11th hold.

Li opened with a 1-over 71 and was 3 over for the championship.

The course is playing soft with no wind and pristine greens, and that could mean record low scores this weekend. Tiger Woods already has another birdie at the eighth to reach 4 under, and first-round leader Rickie Fowler has his first birdie of the day to get to 8 under.

He’s two shots back of Gary Woodland, who already completed his second round. ___ 7 a.m.
